Bowhill is open to the general public for the whole of July. Inside the house is an outstanding collection of works of art in beautiful rooms comprising paintings, furniture, silver, porcelain and historical items linked to Sir Walter Scott and the Duke of Monmouth who was also first Duke of Buccleuch. There is a Victorian kitchen of 130 years ago and a fire engine which is much older than that.
Bowhill is open to educational groups, museum groups and other specialist groups throughout the year by appointment. The country park is open from late April to late Summer Bank Holiday daily except Friday, except in July when it is open together with the house. Outside the house there is adventure woodland playground and there are lovely walks, some take you to the old Victorian ice-house and others to ancient Newark Castle which is about 500 years old. This is however a rather dangerous place as there are many loose stones which could fall off and cause injury.
